About:
The letters MCQS stand for "multiple choice-questions" and MCQS.com is the registered domain name for the site hosting an E-learning web-based application written in the computer language PHP and based on a database called MySQL which is hosted on a shared Linux server .
This application forms the basis of a start-up based in Clash Industrial Estate , Tralee, county Kerry, Ireland , contact email = info@mcqs.com


How it works
High quality content for the site is created internally or purchased from third-parties or obtained directly through data-mining from the internet and inserted into a local SQL server .
Questions are created dynamically from content on the database , and may either be purchased from the author or leased from the author such that the income from each question is divided between MCQS.com and the author
The initial subject material will be aimed at medical pre-graduate and post-graduate examinations, with rapid expansion to include most subjects from Junior Cert level to a more specific and advanced topics such as the Medical Boards exams
The main income will be from the online sale of credit through an AIB merchant account enabled by a realex payment gateway . This credit is used up as each student attempts a question. MCQS.com will be selling access to selected questions for 0-100c (depending on a formula that calculates ranking of each question and demand) as well as access to customised tutorial access for 10-1000c per module .
The credit may also be used to purchase other content (tutorials, tutor, banner sales etc) from the web-site itself with AIB providing the merchant account and Realexpayments provding the payment gateway.


Additional revenue will include:
1. Sale of banner space to Universities, Schools and Private Courses
2. Lease of original licensed material and courses to Universities, Schools and Private Courses
3. Monetisation of the large student traffic (estimated one million per year by 2015) through social media partners
4. Percentage Commission on transferring customised multimedia content
5. Sale of original licensed material and courses on hard-copy DVD format directly to students or through retail agents
6. Sale of dedicated tablet apps using itunes or other agents
7. Using the content to run real-time courses
8. Auction (through online bidding) of tutor-to-student interaction
9. Customised courses for employees of private companies
10. Mass subsidised membership of Universities etc

The Method

Function:
MCQS.com functions as a completely server-based and database controlled application (on an Application Service Provider model ). Content commissioned from third parties by MCQS.com will be processed and quality-controlled before incorporation into an online database and offered to students for free. Students enrolling for the online database can access the material in the database in a format that simulates an actual 'exam' situation. Questions are instantly graded and marked and full explanations are given to both correct and incorrect answers. Each individual student is assigned an individual tracking system that documents individual progress. This same tracking system determines content subsequently presented to each individual student. This same tracking system was awarded a prestigious silver medal at the Scientific Meeting of the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) in San Francisco in 1998.

The application depends on the following components

1. The combination
The combination is a unique code that is generated at random at each question attempt. Each combination generates the following :
a) Question code (the stem)
b) Options code (from 2 to 10 options per combination)
c) The association between the Question and the Option (this may be FALSE or TRUE, in addition there is a scale in betwen where an association may be more TRUE than FALSE (a sliding scale)
d) the "exams" that can generate this combination (maximum of five exams per combination) , therefore the same combination may be used for up to five different exam
e) The SUBTYPE of exam, an infinite number of subtypes can be created with up to five levels of further infinte subdivisions or subcategories.
f) the ranking of each combination. The ranking is determined by the ratio of LIKEs and DISLIKES of this combination as determined by the student. Not all LIKES have the same weight, a higher ranking student would have more weight than a poorly performing student.
g) The PRICE of the question in cents (from 1c to 100c) the final PRICE is determined by the ranking of the combination, the ranking of the tutor and the demand of the question, and is also influenced by geographical , historical and other information obtained from the student profile. The PRICE would determine how many credits are deducted from the student's total on completeion of the question.

2. The score

The score is a code that is generated each time a question is attempted depends on the following components
a) the user
The username of the user that attempted each question b) the combination code
The combination code attempted
c) the exam
The exam attempted
d) the timestamp
The exact time in seconds at which the question was attempted.
e) the mark
the percentage mark obtained at the time of the question attempt by this particular student
f) the relationship
The relationship of the stem to the option , this may be TRUE (1) or FALSE (2) but may also be relatively true or false
g) the choice
The choice as selected by the student
h) the answer
The answer as selected by the tutor
i) the sequence
The number of combinations attempted at the one particular session


Level moderation
Through the application it is possible to change small parts of a question in order to create a completely new question. For example, by changing just a single word a completely new question can be created without having to upload brand new content. Multiple questions can be created from a single learning point, with minimal impact on the database server resources. Other innovative mechanisms include a "digital thermostat" that varies the depth of the question according to the student's progress and explanatory diagrams that are created dynamically from various image components , according to the needs of the student. The explanations to each question are not static but are customised dynamically to reflect the student's previous responses. Explanations to each question are therefore more relevant to the response of the student. For example, if a certain pattern of errors in a specific topic is identified, the student is redirected to a customised tutorial on the subject that is created dynamically, taking into account the student's previous responses, the student's response time, the difficulty level of the subject material, and the performance of the student relative to the rest of the students attempting the same question.

Question ranking
The quality of each question is assessed by the students themselves and there are LIKE and DISLIKE options which wil determine the ranking of each question which will in turn determine the value of each question. Comments to each question are enabled by means of a live interaction with the student during the quiz and we aim to provide a highly intimate interaction with each student during their journey through the quiz.
Live counselling and support for students may also be provided through trained counsellors.

Use of student interaction in order to create fresh content
A unique feature of the application is that it makes extensive use of student interaction in order to create fresh content, this done by inserting a random combination of facts aimed towards a high ranking student , the student is encouraged to answer the question in order to continue progressing to the next stage, the reponse to this question will enable a new entry into the database as a fresh combination . This method of question creation is a highly effective and economic method of inserting a large quantity of fresh quality questions into the database. Therefore it is the students themselves who will be creating some of the content.
The application also creates dynamic customised assessments in PDF format that can be printed out after the student has taken the online mock.

Accessibility
Content on the MCQS.com database may be accessed through any recent browser, including mobile phone browsers. Specific material may be downloaded and practiced 'offline' without the need for installation of any special software. Assessments may also be downloaded in PDF format. Banner space is created dynamically onto the PDF and is sold by live auction.
The server hosting this application includes a PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, which is a server-side HTML-embedded scripting language responsible for most of the processing 'on the fly'. A mySQL (structured query language) database is connected directly to the PHP engine for maximum interactivity and a dedicated JAVA chat server is used for immediate interaction between tutors and students in a 'chat' simulated class-room.

Chatter capture
The interactions between tutor and student as well as the interactions between students themselves provide vital information related to the question being attempted. This chatter will be processed and used in order to generate more questions, options and explanations. By presenting this data randomly to high ranking students a large number of nmew combinations may be generated .


The student dashboard
Each student has a profile that may be accessed by both the student and the tutor which may be used to:
a) Monitor all progress by date and by type of exam
b) Monitor each questioattempted and revise each
c) Interact with a live or offline tutor against an additional cost
d) Interact with fellow students attempting the same examination
e) Purchase more credit for use on the site
f) Be presented with sponsored banners by interested third parties (eg course organisers)
g) Purchase multimedia and hard copy (eg DVD ) content from the site or from third parties partnering with the site
h) Check ranking against other students
i) generate his own collection of combinations which may remain private, public or may be shared selectively with other students.
j) provide an online storage for any student notes etc.
k) purchase online tutorials which are customised to the weak points in the students history
l) Purchase time with a dedicated tutor either by an appointment system or by a live interaction
m) request live or offline support from the student liason officer

The tutor dashboard
Each tutor has a dashboard which may be used to :
a) Enter new combinations
b) Edit current combinations
c) Check income for each combination
d) Check ranking for each combination
e) Check comments for each combination
f) View all students answers to each authored combination
g) Interaction panel with any student, both in real time and offline
h) Insert multimedia tutorials and set cost of each (should the student choose to pay for the content half the income goes to the tutor)

The target customers
The site has been active since August 6th 2013 in a demo version and has already attracted 51,128 unique student registrations with 1,214,058 individual question attempts so far.The vast majority of the registrations are from India (60%), the remainder and equally divided between the United States, the UK and the middle east.
All the registrants are students who wish to practice multiple choice questions before their actual exam.
